F.A.Q.C.
- What does the PTA do?
- PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. Any parent, teacher, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or other adult family member can join. The national PTA motto is “Every child. One voice.” We take that to heart here at Oakstead. The PTA works closely with parents, teachers, and admin to maximize the school experience for each student. We, also, work closely with other schools as well as national outreach programs to assist students in need, and we advocate for children legislatively at the state and national levels where appropriate. Your membership helps to support not only our Oakstead PTA but the Florida PTA as well. The stronger the PTA, the more we can do.
- When are the meetings, and do I have to attend?
- Our Board meetings are usually held on the 2nd Monday of each month. You do not have to be a board member to attend. Our General Membership meetings are held quarterly. Meetings are announced on our Facebook page, on our website, and are included in Oakstead’s weekly emails. You can attend all the meetings or none of them, that is completely up to you. You are welcome to bring your children to any meeting.
- Can I attend board meetings even if I’m not on the Board?
- Yes, absolutely! We welcome your input.
- When are the elections?
- Elections for the following year will be held at the last General Membership meeting of the year. We will announce the date at least a month before. Please plan to attend, if possible, as we need a quorum in order to vote.
- Can I bring my children to the meetings?
- Yes, you can bring your children to meetings. Meetings are located in the OES Media Center. Kids can be on the other side of the room reading, coloring, or working on homework quietly.
- If you have a teenager looking for volunteer hours, they can contact us here to learn how to earn hours supporting the Oakstead Elementary PTA.
- Is there a way I can help without going to meetings or volunteering during the day?
- Yes!! We have positions with the PTA where you can volunteer from home on your own time. Please contact us here to learn how you can help our Otters.
- I heard the PTA is one big clique, is this true?
- This actually couldn’t be further from the truth. Most of us never knew each other at all before joining the PTA. With that said, I’d like to think we’re all friends now! And we’d welcome you with open arms as well! Coming to meetings is a great way to meet other parents from school, even if you’re not able to volunteer very often.
- There’s a parent in the PTA I don’t like or have had issues with…
- The PTA is a volunteer organization and as such we have several different personalities, but just the same as any workplace, church, baseball team, etc., there will always be different people who bring different energies to the table. We do the best job we can to utilize the strengths that each person brings to the table while honoring their desire to serve their child’s school. With that said, if there is a particular interpersonal issue where something egregious in nature is occurring, we do reserve the right to elevate that concern to the school administration. We’d like to think that every volunteer has the best interest of the school and the students at heart. If you’ve have an issue with another parent or volunteer, please reach out to the us here. We want everyone to have a good time while serving in the PTA. Volunteering should be an easy, fun, and enjoyable experience!!
